Researcher of the Cathedral of the Dormition of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra: to the 120th Anniversary of the Birth of M. V. Kholostenko

December 7, 2022 marks the 120th anniversary of birth outstanding Ukrainian architect, historian national architecture, researcher and restorer architectural monuments, teacher Mykola Viacheslavovych Kholostenko (1902—1978). After graduating from Kyiv Institute Architecture in 1929, he taught at Civil Engineering Art Institute, managed design workshop City Council (1938—1941), worked Kyivproject (1953—1958, 1961—1977), held position chief architect Republican Special Research Restoration Production Workshops State Construction Committee USSR (1959—1961). In addition to development projects residential public buildings Kyiv, M. V. had done a lot work on study, protection restoration monuments 10th—18th centuries Chernihiv, Putyvl, Novhorod-Siverskyi. Kholostenko’s contribution study Cathedral Dormition Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra is significant. Many years research (1952—1954, 1962—1963, 1969—1972) allowed him trace construction history entire ecclesiastical complex. found out technical features ancient part cathedral — technology making plinths, method masonry main walls, arches, vaults. He was first who systematized classified bricks 11th—17th centuries. During research, new, previously unknown elements architecture were discovered, hidden behind later extensions. developed scheme dimensions proportions 11th century corrected general plan temple its individual parts. The results archaeological remains analysis iconographic sources provided sufficient grounds for scientific reproduction one recreate original appearance reconstructed Church St. John Baptist. his became basis project Lavra, implemented 1998—2000.
